Responsibilities
- Conduct system tests such as signal/noise, signal/hum, summation sweep, chart recording, return loss bridge, including monthly, semi-annual, and annual tests; RF & optical knowledge/troubleshooting; sweep & balance HFC plant.
- Set trunk levels, set-up and change out trunk amplifiers, calculate signal level losses in cable and equipment for trunk lines and distribution lines.
- Install electronics and make power connections; maintain power supplies.
- Properly use, store, and maintain all test equipment used in the system.
- Assume full responsibility for troubleshooting and repair of the coaxial and fiber distribution system.
- Prepare estimates for projects, providing a bill of materials.
- Work with connectors, fasteners, wire, and hand tools; splice coax & fiber.
- Perform all duties of Broadband Specialist I-V as needed.
- Climb poles with proper equipment (safety belt, safety strap, and climbers), ladders, or other structures.
- Lift and carry loads up to 100 lbs (including line ladder); work within limited confines, such as crawl spaces.
- Perform clean-up and salvage of wrecked-out materials; provide general assistance to other employees as directed.
- On-call duty may be required; perform other assigned functions.
- Perform installations and changes of service while adhering to applicable codes, requirements, guidelines, company procedures, and safe work practices to provide an outstanding customer experience.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
- Valid driver’s license; satisfactory driving record required.
- Minimum 48 months tenure with Mediacom, meeting all responsibilities and training of Broadband Specialist V, or 6+ years’ equivalent cable technician experience.
- Preferred: 2 years’ experience in forward and return path maintenance.
- Practical understanding of headend forward and return continuity.
- Practical understanding of optical transmitters and receiver alignments.
- Knowledge of HFC and fiber technologies including amplifier setup, noise mitigation, PM/DM activity, fiber restoration, and all Broadband Specialist V responsibilities.
- Required: NCTI – Return Path Operations course completion.
- Required: NCTI – Advanced Technician course completion.
- Preferred: NCTI – Fiber Installation and Activation course completion.
- Practical understanding of Field Safety, Service Calls, Business Phone, PRI, and Managed Voice.
- Advanced level of mechanical skills for splicing.
- Ability to interact and communicate with customers and co-workers.
- Ability to work in high or tight spaces.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and at various heights.
- Ability to work flexible work hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Ability to troubleshoot customer premise equipment and cable issues.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent handling of heavy objects (approx. 50-100 lbs.) and materials, or heavy hand tools.
