Job Summary

About the role

We are seeking a British Sign Language (BSL) specialist to contribute to the development of advanced artificial intelligence models. Our project aims to democratize world-class education, improve accessibility for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities, and accelerate communication tools for everyone through high-quality training data.

Responsibilities

• Challenge advanced language models on topics like BSL-to-English translation, classifier usage, receptive and expressive skills, facial expressions in BSL, and spatial grammar.
• Document every failure mode encountered during model testing.
• Verify linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriateness of model outputs.
• Capture reproducible error traces and suggest improvements to prompt engineering and evaluation metrics.
• Converse with the model on real-world BSL communication scenarios and theoretical questions in signed language linguistics.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, Linguistics, or a related field.
• RID certification, teaching experience, or community interpreting projects preferred.
• Clear, metacognitive communication skills.

Qualifications

• Expertise in British Sign Language (BSL) fluency, Deaf culture, visual linguistics, BSL grammar and syntax, non-manual markers, fingerspelling, and regional variations.

Skills

• Strong background in Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, Linguistics, or related fields.
• Experience with large-scale language model training and evaluation.
• Ability to communicate complex linguistic concepts clearly and effectively.

Pay

We offer a pay range of $6-to-$65 per hour, with the exact rate determined after evaluating your experience, expertise, and geographic location. Final offer amounts may vary from the pay range listed above.
