Sign Language Interpreter - Multi-Lingual - Hrly/Int POOL (DSA)
About the role
The Multi-Lingual Sign Language Interpreter facilitates communication and integration of deaf and hard-of-hearing, or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff and university guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and into the university community either by way of American Sign Language (ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral or tactile system of communication).
Responsibilities
- Provide communication access by conveying verbal information into a mode of communication best understood by the deaf, hard-of-hearing and/or otherwise disabled students, faculty, staff, and university guests.
- Interpret between three or more languages, including their regional varieties, and seamlessly interpret between them in real time.
- Work effectively across a range of sign modalities, from ASL to Signed English.
- Understand and apply a variety of cultural norms and accurately convey meaning, register, tone, and intent while ensuring clear and precise communication across languages.
- Adapt easily to diverse consumers, topics, and settings, exercising sound judgment when accepting assignments.
- Communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
- Navigate various campus environments with ease, maintain positive working relationships, and consistently report to work prepared, punctual, and ready to perform their duties.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled multi-language interpreter who is fluent in three languages, including their regional varieties, and can seamlessly interpret between them in real time. They demonstrate a strong understanding of Deaf Culture and can work effectively across a range of sign modalities, from ASL to Signed English. They possess exceptional linguistic, cognitive, and technical abilities, along with strong attention to detail, active listening skills, and a solid command of English grammar and usage.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years volunteer and/or paid experience, or completion of a 4-year degree in Deaf Studies or related field.
- Licenses / Certificates: Interpreters are required by their profession to work towards and seek various levels of professional certification that are recognized on a state and national level as being appropriate in a post-secondary setting, including but not limited to NIC Certification granted by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).

Benefits
Compensation: Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. The salary range for this classification is $75.00 to $77.18 per hour.
Pay
Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
