Bridge EIT/Designer
About the role
HDR Engineering is looking for a Bridge EIT/Designer to join our SC Bridge and Structures Team in Columbia. As part of HDR’s Transportation Business Group, you’ll help shape systems that move people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably. From designing resilient highways and iconic bridges to advancing transit, passenger and freight rail, aviation, federal transportation ports, and marine infrastructure, your work will directly support economic vitality, public safety, sustainable and resilient communities, and quality of life.

Responsibilities
- Participate in bridge designs, develop design plans, perform structural load calculations, and quantity takeoffs
- Review shop drawings and field submittals
- Work in a team environment as well as independently while challenging yourself to acquire knowledge and experience in engineering
- Support the bridge design group and other disciplines by applying structural engineering and detailing techniques in the development of structural designs
- Perform standard bridge engineering/design procedures, develop structural details using specialized software (MicroStation, Mathcad, LARSA, or various concrete and steel design or analysis programs)
- Conduct bridge inspection, perform structural load rating calculations, and assist with geometric layout and bridge type studies
- Some CADD plan production may also be required
- Perform other duties such as bridge inspection and construction observation as needed
- Work with other disciplines (bridge inspection, roadway design, hydraulic analysis, construction services, environmental) within the office
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar structural analysis/design software
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant in our employee-owned culture
- Must be willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment on a wide range of projects
- Strong communication skills
- Must be local to South Carolina (Columbia, Greenville, Fort Mill, or Charleston) or willing to relocate
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification strongly preferred; candidates hired without their EIT will have the title of "Designer" and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression
- Experience with MathCAD and MicroStation
- Familiarity with MIDAS, STAAD, LARSA, OpenBridge Designer, MDX, AASHTOWare BrR, Finite Element Analysis software, and other structural design programs
- Master's degree in civil/structural engineering
- New graduate candidates considered; additional bridge/structural design experience a plus
- Familiarity with AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications and other DOT design guidelines
- Strong understanding and hands-on use of computers for structural layout and design
