Breastfeeding Peer Counselor - Elbert

About the role

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) seeks a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join a dedicated team supporting the mission of protecting lives through various means. This position works directly under the direction and supervision of the WIC Assistant Nutrition Services Director.

Responsibilities

• Counsels and provides breastfeeding information and support to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
• Helps breastfeeding mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
• Completes peer counselor competency checklist, attends training, and maintains accurate records.
• Makes routine contact with WIC participants and refers them to community resources as needed.
• Attends and facilitates breastfeeding support groups and classes.
• Assists in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects.
• Issues breast pump and breastfeeding supplies as appropriate.

Requirements

• Has breastfed at least one baby for a minimum period of 6 months.
• Is a current or former WIC participant.
• Available for working a minimum of 10 hours per week; must be available to work 8 hours in a designated Health Department each week.
• Has reliable transportation.
• Has good communication skills.
• Can read and write English.
• Has basic computer skills.
