About the role
The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) seeks a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join a dedicated team supporting the mission of protecting lives through various means. This position works directly under the direction and supervision of the WIC Assistant Nutrition Services Director.
Responsibilities
- Counsels and provides breastfeeding information and support to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
- Helps breastfeeding mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
- Completes peer counselor competency checklist, attends training, and maintains accurate records.
- Makes routine contact with WIC participants and refers them to community resources as needed.
- Attends and facilitates breastfeeding support groups and classes.
- Assists in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects.
- Issues breast pump and breastfeeding supplies as appropriate.
Requirements
- Has breastfed at least one baby for a minimum period of 6 months.
- Is a current or former WIC participant.
- Available for working a minimum of 10 hours per week; must be available to work 8 hours in a designated Health Department each week.
- Has reliable transportation.
- Has good communication skills.
- Can read and write English.
- Has basic computer skills.
