BREASTFEEDING PEER COUNSELOR

Responsibilities

  • Have on-going contact with pregnant and breastfeeding participants in the clinics, on the telephone and by mail.
  • Educate clients on basic breastfeeding concepts.
  • Follows up with clients and offer support, over telephone and in-person.
  • Offer Information To The Participants Concerning:
    • Position and latch-on
    • Normal infant feeding
    • How to tell if baby is getting enough
    • How to return to work/school
    • How to use a breast pump
    • How to wean a baby from breast feeding
  • Make referrals to the lactation consultant or other health care professional when needed.
  • Complete appropriate documentation on all participants.
  • Aid with group classes, conduct breastfeeding support meetings.
  • Serve as a breastfeeding resource person to WIC staff.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies necessary for the job.
  • Aid with clinic and health fair displays.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Qualifications

    • High School Diploma (or equivalent)
    • A Valid Driver's License
    • WIC knowledge, or have one time been a WIC participant with knowledge and understanding of program is strongly preferred.

    Required Education And Experience

    • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
    • A valid Driver’s License is required.
    • WIC knowledge, or have one time been a WIC participant with knowledge and understanding of program is strongly preferred.
    • Must be willing to successfully complete 20 hours of State approved training after hire.
