Part-Time Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

About the role

This position covers multiple WIC locations and offers up to 29 hours per week, with a minimum of 24 hours required. It provides limited para-professional social services to clients and their families, focusing on prenatal and breastfeeding support.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates prenatal breastfeeding classes alongside Certified Peer Counselors (CPA) for WIC participants
• Provides individual breastfeeding education in the WIC clinic as needed
• Offers basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including education on the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and starting breastfeeding successfully
• Documents peer counselor contacts in the database system
• Attends and participates in monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops
• Completes other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Must have a current or former WIC ID number
• Must have breastfed one or more of your children for six months or longer
• Must be a current or former WIC participant
• Must be bilingual (Spanish/English)
• Must have basic computer skills
• Must have reliable transportation
• Must be able to assist moms with breastfeeding in assigned WIC Clinic
• Must be able to manage multiple duties simultaneously

Qualifications

• Bilingual – Spanish/English
• Public Health experience preferred
• Computer experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, data entry, etc.)
• Excellent customer service and oral communication skills
• Strong desire to help other mothers enjoy a positive breastfeeding experience
