Brand Designer
Blacksmith builds infrastructure to run CI workloads at scale. Our first product accelerates GitHub Actions by operating a global fleet of bare-metal machines, orchestrating tens of millions of Firecracker VMs weekly for 5,000+ companies and reaching ~$50M in ARR in 2.5 years. We manage thousands of bare-metal servers across multiple regions, schedule 100k+ concurrent vCPUs, and run a petabyte-scale Ceph cluster in-house. Backed by $58.5M from Seed to Series B (led by GV and Peak XV), we’re extending our CI platform to power agent sandboxes and a background coding agent.
About the role
As our first in-house Brand Designer, you’ll inherit and evolve a well-established brand system, shaping how Blacksmith looks and sounds across every touchpoint—website, social, events, decks, swag, and more. You’ll translate complex technical concepts into visuals that resonate with engineers, build a scalable visual system for multiple product lines, and collaborate directly with founders and engineering on launch narratives. This role demands a balance of speed and polish, iterating in public while maintaining high craft standards.
Responsibilities
- Own Blacksmith’s visual and verbal identity across all surfaces (website, social, events, decks, swag, etc.).
- Translate technical concepts into engaging, credible visuals for a developer audience.
- Develop a flexible visual system that scales with new product lines, avoiding static guidelines.
- Collaborate with founders and engineering on launch narratives, from storytelling to assets for Hacker News, X, and the blog.
- Ship fast, iterate publicly, and treat the brand as an evolving extension of the product.
- Raise the bar on craft while maintaining speed and quality across the team.
Requirements
- 5+ years in a brand design role, preferably in developer tools, infrastructure, or complex B2B products.
- A portfolio demonstrating systems thinking and versatility across web, motion, print, and presentation, with strong typography and layout.
- Experience building or evolving a brand for a technical product (not just executing existing systems).
- Ability to articulate design decisions and align engineers and founders.
- Comfort with ambiguity, prototyping, and leveraging tools to explore multiple design options.
- Maniacal attention to polish and an instinct for what resonates with developers.
Benefits
- Medical, vision, and dental insurance.
- Competitive base salary + equity.
- 401k match.
- Unlimited PTO.
- Annual offsite.
- Early-exercise stock options.
- 12 weeks fully paid parental leave (US).
