About the Role

The Brake Press Operator performs the following operations: set-up brake, load sheet on conveyor, layout and prep sheet, move sheet of raw steel into brake, bend sheet, and remove from brake. The operator must calibrate with each set and may fill in for other Brake Press operators once competence levels are met. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment for various assembly tasks.

Responsibilities

• Work under the direction of the Production Supervisor.
• Bend products/traps/parts using an overhead magnetic crane to move materials.
• Enter data into the press brake’s computer and complete required reports accurately.
• Prep and set up materials by grinding and marking.
• Communicate problems to the lead person and supervisor.
• Perform work timely to deliver on-time products without manufacturing errors.
• Wear required PPE at all times.
• Verify material thickness using a caliper.
• Prioritize work to meet deadlines with minimal assistance.
• Maintain a clean work area.
• Operate equipment such as grinders and measuring devices.
• Set up, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment.
• Submit two safety contact cards monthly.
• Actively participate in department LEAN activities and demonstrate teamwork.
• Follow Valmont’s quality procedures, standards, and work instructions (WI).
• Edit programs, reset the CNC Press Brake, and troubleshoot malfunctions.
• Read and decipher flat sheets to properly lay out and bend materials.

Requirements

• High awareness for safety at all times.
• Able to make mathematical calculations for product preparation or machinery setup.
• Physically perform job tasks, including lifting, bending, stooping, and twisting.
• Able to lift, push, pull, or tug up to 50 pounds.
• Communicate and interact with coworkers positively.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions.
• Knowledge of both ends (north and south) of the Brake Press.
• Knowledge of quality requirements and standards.
• Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines without errors.
• Work through problems with minimal assistance from leads or supervisors.
• Maintain acceptable production and quality levels.
• Minimum of one (1) year experience in Brake Press/CNC machinery or graduation from an accredited trade school in a related field.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• One to two (1-2) years of experience in Brake Press/CNC machinery or graduation from an accredited trade school in a related field.
• Ability to maintain high operational levels on both ends of the Press Brake.
• Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fraction conversion).
• Ability to read and comprehend flat sheets.
• Proficient in using a tape measure.
