Braille Paraeducator

With supervision, assists classroom teachers in translating print materials into braille and supports the implementation of individualized educational programs (IEP).

Responsibilities

• Assists teachers in braille production of printed materials for students, including tactile graphics, Nemeth code, UEB braille, and proper braille formatting.
• Supports teachers and students in understanding braille materials.
• Assists with personal hygiene needs and instruction as assigned.
• Provides direct classroom support as assigned by supervisor.
• Supervises student activities as assigned.
• Assists students with travel skills and concept development as assigned.
• Provides vocational job coaching as assigned.
• Uses sign language and braille as needed.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of an Associate Degree; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Basic knowledge of special education classroom principles and practices, particularly for students with multiple disabilities and visual impairments, preferred.
• Experience instructing students with severe and profound disabilities or emotional disorders, including behavior management, strongly preferred.
• Basic knowledge of child development, visual impairment, and related materials (e.g., large print, Braille) preferred.
• One year of experience in a youth leadership role preferred.
• Basic knowledge of orthopedically disabled children, including handling, lifting, positioning, feeding techniques, and use of related equipment preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and push or pull in excess of 100 lbs. unassisted.

Skills

• Braille production and formatting (Nemeth code, UEB braille, tactile graphics).
• Sign language (as needed).
• Computer skills, including braille translation software.
• Certifications or trainings that may be required:
  • Gastrostomy tube (G-tube)/Medication Management Certification
  • Braille proficiency
  • Lifting, Transfers & Positioning/Mechanical Lift
  • Driving Certification to transport students
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Training

Schedule

• 37.5 to 40 daytime hours per week, Monday through Friday.
• Half-hour unpaid lunch break daily.
• Flextime within the workweek occasionally required; additional hours infrequently assigned.
• Follows an 11-month school schedule.

Work Environment

• Multiple indoor and outdoor environments around and off campus.
• Varying sound, lighting, and temperature conditions.

• Personal computer and braille translation software.
• Embosser and copy machine.
• Motor vehicle.
• Instructional, therapeutic, adaptive, and orthopedic equipment.

Must ensure 100% compliance with health and safety standards at all times and fully support each student’s program plan.
