About the Role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way, connect readers with the right titles and products, and maintain the store's attractive presentation and efficient operation.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers warmly, answer questions, and assist them in finding products.
  • Unpack and shelve deliveries, tidy displays, and maintain store presentation.
  • Operate registers efficiently to provide quick and friendly service.
  • Develop merchandising skills for books, gifting, toys, and other product categories.
  • Support receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of inventory.
  • Locate books and products using knowledge, tools, and resources like BookMaster.
  • Assist the café team when needed.
  • Understand and apply loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques.
  • Maintain and present books in an attractive manner across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s sections.
  • Make effective book recommendations and support key sales objectives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders).
  • Build expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music, movies, and Newsstand.
  • Support the success of new releases and key products.

Requirements

  • Reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
  • Flexibility to fill scheduling gaps, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Positive, willing, and energetic approach to work.
  • Supportive and considerate of colleagues.
  • Cheerful and helpful demeanor with customers.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and acquire knowledge.
  • Ability to use technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and programs comfortably.
  • Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods, bend repetitively, lift, and walk extensively.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Potential to work in other stores within the cluster if needed.
