About the Role
The Boilermaker will be responsible for removing, replacing, and repairing various piping systems, working on coal-fired boiler components such as soot blowers, burners, and dampers, and handling equipment related to the flue gas desulfurization process. This role requires troubleshooting skills for machinery and equipment within a coal-fired power plant, as well as the ability to dismantle and reassemble pumps.
Responsibilities
- Read specifications to determine the scope of work, including locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
- Identify and properly use all necessary tools for tasks.
- Identify safety risks and implement precautions to eliminate them.
- Fabricate equipment according to blueprints or supervisor instructions.
- Hoist equipment and tools into position using bull rigging or cranes.
- Perform steel fabrication using torches, band saws, plasma cutters, grinders, etc.
- Conduct minor pipe fabrication, including pulling field measurements to repair/replace pipe sections.
- Prepare pipe and steel for welding procedures.
- Follow supervision directions and perform all job duties of the craft trade.
- Stop work when necessary due to misinformation, safety concerns, or risks to personnel or equipment.
- Operate and maintain equipment such as JLGs, man baskets, forklifts, and cranes.
- Perform basic maintenance and inspections on equipment.
- Execute safe rigging practices and use rigging components like come-a-longs, chain hoists, and tuggers.
- Connect pipes and valves using correct procedures and torque wrenches.
- Read and interpret blueprints, craft specs, and procedures.
- Plan and execute work based on drawings and required materials.
- Perform welding and cutting tasks, including setting up and using cutting torches.
- Tie knots for tag lines and lashing.
- Conduct basic math calculations (footage, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions) for craft duties.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience.
- NCCER Written or NCCER Plus Certification.
- Ability to meet all physical requirements, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
- Possession of all required tools (see tool list).
- Reliable transportation.
- Willingness to work a rotating schedule, including nights and weekends.
- Self-motivated.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Qualifications
- NCCER - Industrial Boilermaker Certification.
- Boilermaker Craft Test Certification.
Physical Requirements
- Large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
- Use of arms and hands for signaling, grabbing, holding, turning, pushing, and pulling objects, materials, controls, and tools.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs.
- Work at heights up to 300’ with proper fall protection.
- Work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
- Wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, fall arrest harness, face shield, ear plugs, and goggles.
