About the role

Boilermaker will remove, replace and/or repair various piping systems; work on various coal-fired boiler components including soot blowers, burners, and dampers; work around and have experience with flue gas desulfurization process and equipment. Must troubleshoot and detect both minor and major issues with machines and equipment within a coal-fired power plant, and be able to dismantle and reassemble pumps.

Responsibilities

  • Read specifications to determine the scope of work: locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
  • Identify all tools required for tasks and use them properly.
  • Identify safety risks and the precautions required to eliminate those risks.
  • Fabricate equipment according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
  • Hoist equipment and tools into location via bull rigging or crane.
  • Perform steel fabrication using torches, band saws, plasma cutters, grinders, etc.
  • Perform minor pipe fabrication, including pulling field measurements to repair or replace pipe sections.
  • Prepare pipe and steel for welding procedures.
  • Follow direction of supervision.
  • Perform all job duties of the craft trade.
  • Know when to stop work for misinformation, safety concerns, or any other reason that would create a risk.
  • Read and understand blueprints, craft specs, and craft spec procedures.
  • Locate piece marks for correct views and identify different elevations.
  • Determine correct installation based on orientation and knowledge of symbols from the legend.
  • Apply knowledge of all types of safe rigging practices (chokers, slings, etc.) and rigging components (come-a-longs, chain hoist, tuggers – manual, electric, and pneumatic).
  • Dictate correct knots based on material.
  • Understand all aspects of connecting, including correct procedures for pipe connection bolt-ups and valve installations.
  • Properly use a torque wrench.
  • Read cut sheets, lay out from drawings, cut material, and plan and execute work.
  • Use specialty tools (torque wrench, mill hog, torch, plasma cutter, chop saws, mag drills, Hogan drills).
  • Apply knowledge of cutting torch setup, usage, dangers, cleaning, and types of tips.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance on equipment such as JLG’s man baskets, ST and RT forklifts.
  • Follow safe operations practices, including signaling of equipment (ETS, NCCO, NCCER) and flagging of cranes, forklifts, and man lifts.
  • Tie knots for tag lines and lashing.
  • Perform math calculations (footage, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions) to execute craft duties.
  • Perform any additional duties as instructed.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience as a Boilermaker.
  • NCCER written certification or NCCER Plus certification.
  • Ability to meet all physical requirements, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Possess all required tools (see tool list).
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • NCCER – Industrial Boilermaker certification.
  • Boilermaker Craft Test certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
  • Use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
  • Lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, and work on elevated platforms up to 300’ using proper fall protection.
  • Work outside in various elements, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, fall arrest harness, face shield, ear plugs, and goggles.
