Boiler Technician

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair boilers.
  • Maintain all related systems for performance and respond to complaints and emergency service calls.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and replace/repair: boilers, chillers, air handling units, rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, exhaust systems, refrigeration equipment.
  • Maintain proper refrigerant handling and EPA compliance.
  • Campus Operations Support:
    • Complete assigned work orders accurately and timely.
    • Assist with general maintenance projects when needed.
    • Clock in/out and coordinate with outside contractors and vendors.
    • Maintain tools, equipment, and instruments.
    • Support campus emergency response and after-hours activities.
    • Aid with seasonal shutdown/startup procedures for residence halls and campus buildings.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3-5 years of boiler and HVAC maintenance and repair experience preferred.
  • Valid NY State certifications and licenses related to boilers and HVAC required.
  • EPA Universal Certification required.
  • Working knowledge of: commercial HVAC systems, chilled water systems, hot water and steam systems, variable air volume (VAV) systems, building automation systems, refrigeration systems, electrical troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Strong troubleshooting and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
  • Active driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Lifting and Carrying: ability to lift 50 - 75 lbs., routine lifting between 10-35 lbs., frequent lifting and carrying light to moderate weight equipment or tools.
  • Mobility: Perform physically active work including bending, walking, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods. Occasional need to reach overhead to perform work duties. Frequent standing, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and working in mechanical spaces.
  • Sensory Requirements: Good vision, with corrective lenses as necessary. Good hearing, with assistive devices as necessary.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all OSHA, EPA, and PPE safety procedures.
  • Maintain required certifications and licenses.
  • Ensure compliance with campus safety and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and preventative maintenance records.

Physical Requirements

  • Environmental Conditions: Work in indoor academic and residential spaces with normal temperature ranges for the season. Fast-paced environment throughout the year. Non-routine spaces, including rooftops.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift 50 - 75 lbs., routine lifting between 10-35 lbs., frequent lifting and carrying light to moderate weight equipment or tools.
  • Mobility: Perform physically active work including bending, walking, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods. Occasional need to reach overhead to perform work duties. Frequent standing, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, and working in mechanical spaces.

Benefits

The position offers a competitive salary of $37.00 per hour, with a flexible 8-hour shift between 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The schedule includes the ability to flex shifts based on priorities. Please note that this position is exempt from overtime pay under FLSA guidelines.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $37.00.

Schedule

The Boiler Technician works a standard 8-hour shift between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the flexibility to adjust shifts based on campus needs.
