About the role
The incumbent will perform regulatory safety inspections of high/low pressure boilers and installations under the direction of a Senior Boiler Inspector, ensuring compliance with the Labor Law and industrial rules. The role involves responding to complaints or accidents, which may require physical tasks such as climbing through small openings or on top of boilers.
Responsibilities
- Conduct scheduled regulatory safety inspections of boilers to ensure safe operating conditions.
- Enforce compliance with statutory provisions of the Labor Law and industrial rules related to boiler operations.

Requirements
- Four years of commercial, residential, or military experience in boiler making, boiler installation or inspection, or in the operation and maintenance of high and/or low pressure boilers, including all firing apparatus and control devices.
- Substitution: An associate degree in engineering technology, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, or mechanical technology, plus two years of the experience described above.
- As this position requires travel, a valid New York State driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle (or the ability to meet transportation needs) are required.
- This position is designated 55b/c and requires verification of applicant eligibility; provide a copy of your 55b/c letter when applying.
Qualifications (alternate pathways)
- Reassignment: Current Department of Labor employees with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Boiler Inspector position. If less than one year, must be reachable on the current Boiler Inspector eligible list for this location.
- 70.1 Transfer: At least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Plant Utilities Engineer 1.
- 70.4 Transfer: At least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Grade 12 or higher, plus a passing score on the Boiler Inspector exam. Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title.

Additional Information
- This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.
- Some positions may require a medical examination prior to appointment, with the appointee responsible for the clinical laboratory test fee. Periodic medical examinations may also be required to reassess ability to perform essential duties.
- Occasional altered work schedules or out-stationed assignments may be required, including evenings.
- Employees will be required to travel for training purposes, not to exceed one week at a time.
- Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range.
- Telecommuting is available and can be discussed during the interview (up to 2 days per regular work-week, not to exceed 4 days per two-week pay period).
- Employment is contingent upon maintaining valid work authorization in the United States.
