About the role
The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges manages over 800 bridges and tunnels, ensuring safety and mobility. Bridge Operators assist in the opening and closing of movable bridges, operate light signals and traffic gates, sweep and clean roadways and bridge houses, remove snow and ice, and report malfunctions.
Responsibilities
- Operate light signals and traffic gates
- Sweep and clean roadways, bridge houses and engine rooms
- Remove snow and ice from roadways and footwalks
- Report malfunctions, accidents and mechanical defects to prevent dangerous situations
- Perform other related duties
Requirements
- Preferred skills: Effective communication, valid NY driver’s license without restrictions
- Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent, relevant experience in mechanical or electrical fields, or a combination thereof
- Licenses: Valid NY driver’s license
Qualifications
- Assignment level I: One year of full-time satisfactory mechanical or electrical experience
- Assignment level II: One full year of technical education in electrical or mechanical field
- Assignment level III: Two years of experience as a Bridge Operator, including one year as Assignment Level II; or three years of full-time satisfactory mechanical or electrical experience
- Assignment level IV: Three years of experience as a Bridge Operator, including one year as Assignment Level III
