BMC - ADMISSIONS CLERK
Reviews medical records after discharge for completeness in compliance with the hospital's bylaws, federal, and state requirements. Ensures patient abstracts are correctly entered into the chart deficiency system. Monitors accounts being admitted daily for duplication of medical records numbers and checks patients' discharge status when assembling the chart. Communicates with physicians about delinquent reports and ensures completion of incomplete medical records within specified timeframes.
Responsibilities
- Collects all discharged patient charts from the patient care units on a daily basis.
- Collects loose filing for those discharged charts and inserts such filing in proper charts.
- Assembles discharged patient charts according to assembly list.
- Places assembled chart in proper folder according to medical record number.
- Analyzes medical records of discharged patients for completeness and accuracy according to department and hospital policies and procedures.
- Assists in retrieving charts for physician completion.
- Answers incoming calls to the department in a professional, timely manner.
- Forwards all analyzed charts to the coder.
- Pulls delinquency charts according to deficiency list.
- Files or scans all charts back to main file.
- Makes and attaches medical record numbers for new charts.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
- One to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to use hospital information system and operate basic computer functions and software.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to work well with others.
