Blood Donor Technician I

About the Role

This position is in the Blood Donor Program working with volunteer blood donors. Blood Donor Technicians are required to work in the Boston Blood Donor Center as well as on our Bloodmobile, which is based in Waltham and travels to communities throughout Massachusetts.

Responsibilities

• Obtain accurate and complete medical history information from blood donors.
• Utilize knowledge of requirements and regulations pertaining to blood donation to make accurate decisions related to donor suitability.
• Make appropriate decisions regarding donor suitability, referring any questions to nursing staff or medical director/designee when necessary.
• Select appropriate venipuncture sites based on knowledge of pathophysiology.
• Perform phlebotomy for collection of whole blood, routinely practiced automated and manual apheresis procedures, autologous collection, and therapeutic phlebotomy following established policies and standard operating procedures.
• Monitor donors to ensure comfort, safety, and adequate blood flow.
• Monitor individuals for adverse reactions, initiating treatment and/or seeking assistance from nursing staff when appropriate.
• Accurately prepare, label, and complete all containers, samples, labels, and forms.
• Enter donor and donation information into the computer, ensuring all information is complete and accurate, and reassess donor suitability.
• Bring any errors to the attention of senior staff to ensure correction and resolution.
• Monitor and stock supplies, notifying appropriate staff when re-order levels are reached.
• Communicate courteously with co-workers, patients, parents, and visitors, maintaining a commitment to excellence and mutual respect.
• Resolve problem situations with parents/patients or refer to senior staff as appropriate.
• Perform regularly scheduled quality control, preventative maintenance, and calibration of equipment according to established SOPs.
• Participate in continuous improvement efforts.
• Have knowledge of all programs offered by the department and effectively communicate these to visitors, donors, patients, parents, and families.
• Contribute to teamwork within the department and work cooperatively with other departments and organizations when required.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
• Required to work rotating weekends.

Pay

The posted pay range is Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting. Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
