Blood Donor Phlebotomist (Part Time/Varied Shifts)

This part-time (20 hours/week) position processes and evaluates prospective donors, performs donor phlebotomies, and aids in donor recruitment. The role prepares blood components from donated blood and provides care to patients across adolescent (16–18 years), adult (19–64 years), and geriatric (65 years and above) age groups.

Location: Lancaster, PA (assigned daily to the main office at the Suburban Pavilion or off-site at blood drives throughout Lancaster County). Hours vary Monday–Friday, 7am–9pm, with rare weekends and no holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Greets donors/patients and explains the medical history card, forms, and donation procedures for regular, autologous, and directed donors.
  • Completes computer registration of prospective donors, verifies data accuracy, and documents deferral codes.
  • Obtains vital signs and evaluates medical history according to AABB procedures, FDA, and laboratory guidelines to determine donor acceptability.
  • Performs donor phlebotomy, including labeling and tagging units, and monitors donors for adverse reactions following AABB and standard operating procedures.
  • Opens therapeutic phlebotomy patient accounts in EPIC, obtains billing numbers and signatures, and performs procedures under physician orders and Medical Director approval.
  • Administers post-phlebotomy care, treats reactions under RN/physician direction, and documents all incidents.
  • Travels to and sets up mobile blood collection sites, maintains supplies for fixed and mobile sites, and transports materials as needed.
  • Monitors and replenishes stock, performs routine cleaning/decontamination of instruments, and verifies donor scales.
  • Assists in donor recruitment, clerical tasks (filing, appointments, donor cards), and mobile blood drive preparation.
  • Performs and records QC parameters, reports out-of-range situations, and implements corrective actions.
  • Prepares and labels blood components from whole blood by centrifugation as directed by Blood Bank personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license for off-site mobile blood drives.
  • CPR certification.
  • Six months of employment in a healthcare setting required; blood center or donor collection center preferred.
  • One year of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a blood donor or blood center setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as Phlebotomy Technician (PBT ASCP).
