BLOOD BANK SPECIALIST, BLOOD BANK

Position Summary

Responsible for quality performance and reporting of analyses of technical procedures for the benefit of optimal patient care within the limits of laboratory policy and procedures according to FDA, DNV, CAP, CLIA, AABB, OSHA regulations. The position requires work in the Blood Bank department including ABORH and antibody screen testing, antibody identifications, direct antiglobulin testing, performance of testing in the tube using various potentiators, the use of solid-phase hemagglutination and capture technology; fetal bleed screen testing, cord blood testing, and compatibility testing. Must be able to work with blood providers and reference laboratories to obtain blood products. Must be able to work with laboratory information systems to document work performed. Must be able to perform applicable quality controls and assurance procedures to satisfy requirements put forth by accrediting agencies overseeing the operations of the department.

Qualifications

• Must hold a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
• Must be certified by ASCP as an MT/MLS with the Specialist in Blood Banking designation with American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Must show completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS.
• Must have documented laboratory training in Blood Bank.
• Preference to have at least three years of general blood bank experience and may be newly certified as a Blood Bank Specialist (SBB) with ASCP.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient’s age tested and seen in their assigned area.
• Must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age-specific needs and provide care needed by each group (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric).
• Must have normal color vision in order to discriminate and verify diagnostic laboratory stains and color-dependent tests.
• Must be able to demonstrate sufficient familiarity with laboratory and blood bank procedures and processes, to know basic principles and terminology, and to understand and solve simple problems.
• Ability to perform ABORH testing, antibody screening and identification, direct antiglobulin testing, fetal hemorrhage screening, crossmatching red blood cell products, preparing plasma, platelet and cryoprecipitate products.
• Ability to review work performed by other MLS, MT, and MLT technologists and may consult with Pathology and Management as appropriate.
• Ability to modify and issue products.
• Follows FDA current good manufacturing guidelines.
