About the role
The Department of Pathology at the University of Miami has several openings for a Senior Medical Technologist for the Blood Bank. This position involves verifying specimen identification, preparing specimens for testing, analyzing results, maintaining equipment, and coordinating work schedules.
Responsibilities
- Verifies identification of specimens with physicians' orders and prepares specimens for testing.
- Handles all specimens safely and carefully.
- Analyzes and interprets testing results, referring abnormal or unusual results to pathologists for evaluation.
- Researches and prepares pertinent patient data.
- Calibrates equipment, orders supplies, and maintains inventory of relevant forms and materials.
- Recognizes and corrects test inconsistencies, providing support to colleagues in resolving similar issues.
- Assumes lead duties and serves as a resource to staff.
- Orients and trains new employees on laboratory techniques and operations.
- Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of patient test results.
- Coordinates and prioritizes simultaneous series of tests, especially in Chemistry and Hematology.
- Ensures proper handling of packing slips, verifying quantities and documenting accordingly.
- Maintains accurate records of proficiency testing samples.
- Performs daily, weekly, and periodic maintenance tasks as scheduled and properly documented.
- Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol.
- Assists in the maintenance of hardware by changing paper, labels, and/or printer ribbons when necessary.
- Contact the Biomedical department for equipment service needs.
- Works on projects assigned by Supervisor/Manager.
- Adheres to all Administration, Environmental of Care, CHP, Safety, Infection Control, and Laboratory policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Current Florida State Medical Technologist License in Hematology, Chemistry, Immunohematology, Immunology, and Microbiology.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.

- Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
