Birth Registrar - Labor and Delivery - Weekends
About the role
The position is scheduled Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 7am to 7pm.
Responsibilities
- Manages the birth certificate process for all live births and fetal deaths on the unit.
- Collects and submits demographic and statistical data from worksheets and EPIC to Vital Records.
- Researches charts to ensure accuracy meeting NCHS/CDC requirements.
- Performs monthly audits of documentation and releases them to VDH.
- Supports the DSS program to acknowledge paternity for unmarried parents, educates them on rights and responsibilities, and audits paternity forms for accuracy including notarization.
- Aids parents in completing paternity papers and reports documents weekly to the Virginia Paternity Establishment Program.
- Enrolls medical certifiers as the facility user administrator for fetal deaths to comply with VDH requirements and deadlines.
- Collaborates with the decedent affairs department when a birth results in a death on the unit.
- Ensures all reports (typed and submitted) are accurate based on information from worksheets and verified with patients.
- Notarizes all required documents.

Access Level and Type of Experience Required: N/A
Level and Type of Experience Preferred: Six months relevant experience; understanding medical terminology is essential; completes and maintains training related to Live Birth, Fetal Death, and Death per the CODE of Virginia as well as NCHS/CDC Guidelines for Reporting required by VDH.
Education/Training Required: High School or GED

Additional Position Requirements: Shifts are primarily day shifts and cover weekdays, weekends, and some holidays; Requires obtaining Notary Public access; Physical demands include lifting less than 20 lbs., prolonged sitting, repetitive motion, keyboarding, and mouse usage; Mental/Sensory demands include strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking; Emotional demands include fast-paced environment, steady pace, and ability to adapt to frequent change.
