BioWatch Program Senior Field Technician

About the role

Performs basic and complex aspects of BioWatch field operations, including filter preparation, installation, collection, transport, troubleshooting, and oversight of the ambient air monitoring system. Provides technical leadership and field support to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of the BioWatch monitoring network.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform the preparation, installation, collection, and transport of BioWatch filters in accordance with strict protocols and chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot BioWatch and ambient air monitoring equipment, including electrical, mechanical, and electronic system components within scope of training.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex equipment malfunctions; coordinate major repairs with vendors, engineers, or higher-level technical staff.
  • Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality assurance protocols, and federal/state regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee ambient air monitoring station operations, including calibration, audits, preventive maintenance, and data validation in accordance with TCEQ and EPA standards.
  • Review environmental data for accuracy, completeness, and quality assurance compliance.
  • Perform site assessments and ensure proper functioning and security of monitoring locations.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to field technicians and lower-level staff.
  • Assist in scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work of field personnel as directed.
  • Maintain detailed records of sampling activities, equipment maintenance, calibration logs, and operational reports.
  • Support emergency response activations and special public health surveillance operations.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or higher in Environmental Science, Public Health, Homeland Security, Electrical Technology or related field
  • Or 30 hours of college credits in science, public health, homeland security or a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in environmental monitoring, field-based studies, public health preparedness, emergency response, technical field operations, or electrical and mechanical equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by the date of appointment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
