Full-time, 12-month Medical Faculty position in the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University. Posting begins 10/19/2026; open until filled.

About the role

The Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine (CMED) at Central Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in translational biomedical research at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek an innovative investigator who will establish and sustain an independent, externally funded research program that connects fundamental biological discovery with improved understanding, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of human disease. The successful candidate will bring broadly applicable methods, models, or technologies that complement CMED's strengths and expand the capabilities of its collaborative research community. Priority will be given to candidates whose work has clear translational relevance and creates opportunities for interdisciplinary team science. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, cancer biology, neuroscience, immunology, genetics and genomics, molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, infectious diseases, physiology, pathology, synthetic biology, biomedical engineering, advanced human-relevant cellular models, electrophysiology, and research technology development. Scientific excellence and translational potential are more important than a single disciplinary label.

This position is designed to strengthen CMED's research enterprise. Especially compelling programs will bridge laboratory discovery and human health through one or more of the following:

  • Human-relevant experimental platforms, including three-dimensional cultures, spheroids, organoids, induced pluripotent stem cells, or related disease models.
  • Genomic, molecular, cellular, immunologic, electrophysiologic, imaging, engineering, computational, or synthetic-biology approaches that can be applied across disease areas.
  • Development or validation of tools and technologies that enable multiple investigators and accelerate translation.
  • Mechanistic studies that inform biomarkers, therapeutic targets, diagnostics, interventions, or implementation in relevant clinical or community settings.
  • Strategic use of existing CMED equipment and infrastructure, coupled with a realistic plan for laboratory growth and external funding.

CMED is committed to providing the conditions required for research success, including protected research effort, appropriate laboratory space, a competitive start-up package, access to relevant equipment and shared resources, research administration, and support for trainees and personnel. Final resources will be aligned with the candidate's research plan, Assistant Professor rank, and programmatic needs.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, DO, MD/PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant biomedical discipline.
  • Record of peer-reviewed scholarship appropriate for the Assistant Professor academic rank.
  • Evidence of rigorous and productive scholarship in translational or disease-focused biomedical research.
  • Coherent, innovative research agenda with strong potential for independent extramural funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaborative, interdisciplinary research environments.
  • Commitment to excellence in mentoring, education, collegiality, and responsible conduct of research.
  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring students, residents, clinicians, or other developing investigators.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current peer-reviewed funding or a documented trajectory toward competitive federal or equivalent external support.
  • Expertise in three-dimensional cultures, spheroids, organoids, induced pluripotent stem cells, and other models that more closely reproduce human disease.
  • Expertise in genetics/genomics, immunology, biomedical engineering, synthetic biology, computational approaches, electrophysiology, or novel technology development.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams or contributing substantively to collaborative grant applications.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with investigators from clinical, public health, and other disciplines.
  • A record of effective mentorship and teaching in medical, graduate, or other health-professions education.
