Assistant Professor of Biology, Biomedical Science

Montclair State University’s Department of Biology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biomedical Science. About the Role

The Department of Biology seeks an outstanding scholar and educator who will establish an innovative, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, demonstrate excellence in teaching across the biology curriculum, and contribute to the department's strong tradition of collegiality, service, and student success.

Teaching could include courses in introductory cell and molecular biology, advanced molecular biology, genetics, or courses in other areas developed by the successful candidate. All research areas in cell and molecular biology will be considered, with a preferred emphasis on biomedical research using both standard and innovative organismal models. We seek candidates who are interdisciplinary, collaborative, and student-centric.

The standard annual teaching load for tenure-track faculty is 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) per semester, with reassigned time (course release) available for faculty with additional responsibilities such as mentoring doctoral faculty or administering programs. The University supports research through the Faculty Scholarship Program (FSP), which typically provides research-active faculty with up to 6 TCH of reassigned time per academic year.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain an innovative, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students.
• Demonstrate excellence in teaching, including classroom instruction, student mentoring, and advising.
• Develop and update courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities, using inclusive pedagogies and integrating emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments.
• Contribute to the department’s mission through research, scholarship, and creative activity, sharing results in significant national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues.
• Perform service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities, including participation in shared governance and academic program vitality.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, providing fundamental training in the process of science.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, or a related biomedical field.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, as evidenced by peer/student evaluations and/or other materials, particularly in specialty and introductory-level biology courses.
• Track record of recent research publications and a history of successful grant activity.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
• Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives within the department.

Pay
