General Summary

Under supervision - performs inspections, installs and services assigned medical equipment and systems utilized in the treatment, care, diagnosis and monitoring of patients. Equipment serviced includes IV pumps, thermometers, scales, and vital sign monitors. May also inspect, install and service non-medical equipment such as nurse call systems, security cameras and access control. Utilizes knowledge of manufacturer's manuals, troubleshooting techniques and preventive maintenance schedules to repair, calibrate and maintain specific medical equipment. Provides ongoing support to staff to minimize equipment downtime and reduce user errors. Evaluates equipment maintenance history and recommends service options to provide the most cost effective solutions while maintaining the required quality, safety and minimum amount of equipment down time.

Principal Job Functions

  • Inspects, installs and services assigned equipment and systems; troubleshoots, calibrates and repairs specific electronic equipment or requests equipment be sent to outside service site for repair. Assists in providing ongoing support to staff to minimize equipment down time and reduce user errors. Assists in the installation of new equipment and assigned systems, according to schedule.
  • Maintains, administers and updates specialized hardware and software systems and maintains accurate project-related documentation.
  • Modifies assigned equipment to meet customer needs.
  • Safety tests equipment and Medical Center's structural environment to ensure patient and staff safety from electrical and mechanical hazards. Assists in writing and updating preventive maintenance procedures as requested.
  • Evaluates specific electronic equipment maintenance history and recommends service options to provide the most cost effective solutions while maintaining the required quality, safety, and minimum amount of equipment down time. Attends training classes to expand and maintain a high profeciency level on assigned equipment and systems; advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities.
  • Demonstrates and explains correct operation of specified electronic equipment to medical personnel; communicates knowledge of equipment and systems as requested by coworkers and customers.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical safety precautions and intervention techniques.
  • Knowledge of customer service philosophies and practices.
  • Knowledge of medical electronics principles and theory required to troubleshoot failed electronic equipment to the component level.
  • Knowledge of network design, IP protocol suite and network devices.
  • Knowledge of PC configurations and troubleshooting MS Windows workstations.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of power tools, hand tools and measuring devices.
  • Skill in reasoning in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations with limited documentation.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with IT support staff to install, maintain, and troubleshoot specialized medical systems.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
  • Ability to function in a sterilized environment if necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.
  • Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

Education And Experience

  • Associates of Applied Science degree in Electronics or equivalency required.
  • Prior experience in the medical equipment service field preferred.
  • AAMI CBET pre-certification preferred.
