Biology Laboratory Manager

Full-time, exempt position reporting to the Biology Department Chair.

About the role

The Biology Laboratory Manager oversees the ordering, stocking, and inventory of chemicals, glassware, equipment, and supplies. They train and supervise student laboratory assistants, prepare laboratory materials for biology and related courses, perform routine equipment maintenance, and support faculty research projects. The role may also involve assisting faculty in developing new experiments.

Responsibilities

• Inventory stock, prep, and storage rooms; maintain computerized records of supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
• Order and stock laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Prepare solutions, specimens, and materials for labs.
• Hire, organize, and supervise Student Lab Assistants; submit evaluations and time sheets.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment and coordinate repairs with external service providers.
• Order and coordinate materials for student research projects.
• Maintain the general appearance and operation of labs, prep, and storage rooms.
• Assist faculty in the development of new lab experiments and procedures as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline (Master’s degree preferred).
• Experience in biological laboratory operations, including preparation of solutions and media, autoclave operation, handling of specimens, and use of physiological data acquisition equipment.
• Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, and database operations.

Skills

• Technical ability to read and interpret safety rules, weigh and measure chemicals, follow procedure manuals, and write routine reports.
• Experience handling and culturing organisms for laboratory and research purposes.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse student populations, faculty, vendors, and the public.
• Ability to manage interpersonal conflicts with tact, diplomacy, and discretion.

Workplace Factors

• Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, biological and chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards, and electrical shock.
• Physical requirements include standing or sitting for prolonged periods, occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and twisting.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds.
• Repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, including use of a computer keyboard and scientific equipment.

Schedule

• Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
