The Direct-Hire position is located within the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products, Office of Science, Non-Clinical Division, in Silver Spring, Maryland.

About the Role

The incumbent will serve as a subject matter expert, providing authoritative scientific advice on exposure assessments and health determinations related to tobacco products.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with scientific project objectives in accordance with policy guidelines.
  • Review biological results of studies and investigations affecting biology resources.

This position falls under the 0401 occupational series (Biologist). All qualification requirements must be met by 11:59 pm (Eastern Time) on 08/24/2026.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
  • OR a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in the fields listed above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualifications (GS-11)

Specialized Experience: One year of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time) that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Experience may have been obtained in federal service, state/local government, the private sector, or non-governmental organizations.

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, including assisting with scientific project objectives and reviewing biological study results.

OR

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • OR three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.
  • OR a combination of specialized experience and graduate education that equals 100% of the total requirement.

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, such as volunteer experience through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations.

The Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implements the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. CTP regulates tobacco products based on the best available science and fosters scientific research to support its mission. CTP's work has significant public health and consumer protection impacts.
