Biological Scientist

Position Objective

The Biological Scientist will provide support services to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases within the National Institutes of Health.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory studies in molecular and cellular biology.
• Perform a wide variety of procedures and techniques which include buffer preparation, SDS-PAGE, western blot, recombinant DNA technologies, immunofluorescence and cell culture.
• Perform studies with infectious flaviviruses (dengue and West Nile viruses).
• Perform routine virus culture and purification protocols, antibody neutralization experiments.
• Perform analysis of cell populations by flow cytometry.
• Record the details of all experiments, results, and analysis in a bound notebook.
• Maintain laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment.
• Order and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials.
• Handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological waste.
• Analyze, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the leadership as part of the planning process for subsequent studies.
• Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data and prepare summaries of laboratory findings and routinely present these findings in lab meetings.
• Participate in the preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, and/or posters.
