Biological Science Technician (Fisheries).

About the Role

This is a full-time seasonal position with rotating shifts, operating from approximately March through November. The role involves the operation of juvenile fish transportation facilities and/or barges, data collection, and coordination with researchers.

Responsibilities

• Operate juvenile fish transportation facilities and/or barges.
• Collect and maintain data associated with the juvenile fish transportation program.
• Provide detailed reports to supervisors on facility or barge operations regularly.
• Collect fish, load raceways and barge holds, and determine fish numbers, loading densities, and overall fish behavior and condition.
• Make recommendations to improve facility and/or barge operations and equipment.
• Ensure fish facilities and/or barges are operated within fish passage criteria.
• Coordinate with and/or assist researchers working on fish facilities or barges.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
• Pre-employment physical is required.
• Valid state driver's license is required.
• Shift work is required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
• Heavy lifting requirement of 30 lbs.
• Seasonal position with up to 25% temporary duty (TDY) travel.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.
• One-year probationary period is required.
• Direct deposit of pay is required.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

GS-5 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting and maintaining scientific data, operating fish or other animal transportation equipment such as fish counters and other animal enumeration technology, electronic valves, and performing fish or other animal sampling operations using standard biological techniques. This experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level (GS-04).
• Education: A four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a field demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the position, such as biology, fish and wildlife, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. Transcripts are required.
• Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

GS-6 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes the collection, holding, and transportation of fish or other animals, equipment operation such as electronic fish counters or other animal enumeration technology, electronic valves, pneumatic gates, and scientific data collection. This experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level (GS-05).
• Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a directly related field, such as biology, fish and wildlife, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.
• Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

GS-7 Level

• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes the collection, holding, and sampling of fish or other animals, equipment operation such as crowders, fish or animal transportation barges/tanks, fish bypass systems, PIT tag interrogation equipment, recirculation systems, and scientific data collection. This experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level (GS-06).
• Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a directly related field, such as biology, fish and wildlife, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.
• Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

Foreign Education

If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program.
