About the role

The role involves assisting with the propagation of fish, plants, and other aquatic organisms at the Bears Bluff National Fish Hatchery. Duties include performing daily husbandry tasks such as feeding, weighing, and measuring fish and aquatic organisms, cleaning enclosures, monitoring water quality, and assisting with controlled reproduction activities.

Responsibilities

• Assists with propagation of fish, plants, and other aquatic organisms at the Bears Bluff National Fish Hatchery.
• Performs daily husbandry duties: feeding, weighing, and measuring fish and aquatic organisms.
• Cleans, monitors, and performs light maintenance on enclosures and life support systems.
• Maintains hatchery water quality and environmental parameters, reporting deviations to supervisor.
• Assists biologists with controlled reproduction of fish and other aquatic organisms, including egg collection, husbandry of offspring, and scheduled deliveries.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Must be registered for Selective Service.
• Direct Deposit participation required.
• Pass E-Verify employment verification check.
• Uniform and compliance with uniform standards required.
• Live within a 75-mile radius of Wadmalaw Island, SC.
• At least 18 years old or 16 years old with certain educational qualifications.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Probationary period of one year.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualification (GS-05): One year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-4 level or higher in the Federal service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience in fish hatchery work, fish surveys, and fishery-related studies; assist with the preparation, maintenance, and use of equipment; record information in legible form; assist with collection, stocking, population determination, and species identification; participate in fishery management surveys.
