Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs data and analysis-related tasks, including but not limited to, processing next-generation sequence data (NGS) applications, manipulating common genomic file formats (e.g. FASTQ, SAM, BAM) for NGS experiments, performing quality control for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) or NGS studies, performing downstream analyses, and recommending, creating and maintaining local bioinformatics databases, as well as making proper use of public databases.
- May convert study data to and from common genetic (e.g. PLINK, VCF) file formats.
- Assists with the development of grant applications, presentation of results and preparation of scientific papers for publication.
- Participates in formal and informal training activities, monthly journal clubs and grant writing meetings.
- Maintains knowledge of current changes and developments in the bioinformatics fields through publications, communicating with subject matter experts, and attending related workshops and conferences.
- Identifies and resolves technical issues and proposes upgrades to current software.
- Evaluates and identifies new technologies for implementation.
- Interfaces with high-performance computing staff as needed.
- Provides consultation services and training on bioinformatics-related concepts, applications and tools.
- Designs, develops and implements software workflow, pipelines and tools, and analytical procedures supporting bioinformatics analysis.
- Participates in informatics projects providing evaluation, design and building of databases, web applications and other services to support the needs of investigators and departmental needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Computer Science or a related field.
