Bindery Operator 1 - 1st Shift

About the role

Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines containing several cutting heads, control surfaces, or other attachments (e.g., inkjet and mailing devices, case making & decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines). May set up automatic bindery machines containing multiple functions and station capabilities (power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binder) that can be electromechanically combined with other equipment to produce a complete bindery and finishing unit processing printed sheets into final books, catalogs, manuals, directories, magazines, or other completed products.

• Inspect equipment for safety issues
• Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) with numerous interrelated process stations that perform functions such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering, and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines, or catalogs
• Make adjustments to coordinate multiple work stations on a single machine
• Direct crew through all aspects of production
• Monitor quality, output, and productivity
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Familiarity with different paper weights, sizes, kinds, and colors to identify paper conditions (e.g., excessive moisture or curling that may require additional machine adjustment)
• Familiarity with basic mathematics (e.g., decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements in job orders and make complex adjustments
• Ability to use standard and specialized tools to adjust and maintain bindery machines (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives, and manufacturer-provided tools)
• Ability to read and interpret written work instructions indicating machine operations and dimensional accuracy
• Knowledge of operating procedures for bindery equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, and binding/gluing machines
• Working knowledge of setup, adjustment, procedures, capabilities, and limitations of equipment to perform folding, collating, and cutting of printed materials

Schedule

12-hour rotating day shift (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM), every other weekend. Qualified candidates must be able to work days, evenings, and weekend hours.

Pay

The pay range for this role at the noted location is $20.15 to $22.40 per hour. The actual rate of pay may vary based on education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift, and location. In addition to base salary, the role may include overtime, shift differential, call-in, and stand-by pay.
