Billing Clerk II (Temporary)
For more than 55 years, Family Health Centers of San Diego’s (FHCSD) mission has been to provide caring, affordable, high-quality health care and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low-income and medically underserved persons. FHCSD is one of the top 10 largest federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the country, operating more than 90 sites across San Diego County, including primary care, behavioral health, physical rehabilitation, dental, vision, substance use treatment, mobile medical units, and urgent care centers. Our staff provides care to over 227,000 patients annually, with 91% low-income and 29% uninsured. Services include adult and pediatric care, chronic disease management, women’s health, dental, vision, case management, physical rehabilitation, behavioral health, substance use counseling, and specialty services such as cardiology, podiatry, endocrinology, and dermatology. FHCSD also offers supportive services for unsheltered individuals needing intensive case management.
Responsibilities
- Completes all required documentation accurately, promptly, and thoroughly in accordance with department standards; ensures documentation complies with patients' insurance requirements.
- Files documents and updates electronic records accurately.
- Creates and sends routine and non-routine claim forms for assigned 3rd party payor sources, using independent judgment to resolve non-routine billing issues.
- Verifies information for accuracy and completeness.
- Works with accounts and payors of moderate complexity, requiring thorough knowledge of billing requirements.
- Follows up and resolves accounts receivable; collects payments from patients for self-pay or co-pay/deductible accounts.
- Performs data entry with accuracy and timeliness.
- Posts payments and updates accounts with denials; follows up on pending requests and denials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience with high-volume medical billing and 3rd party payors.
- CRT and ten-key experience preferred.
- Graduation from a related technical school or equivalent experience in the medical field is preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the skills, knowledge, and ability to perform the essential job duties, and meets any required state or federal certification requirements.
- Occasional travel between sites and other locations; must have a valid California driver’s license, an automobile, and proof of minimum car insurance as required under California law (limits of $100,000 recommended). An acceptable driving record is required.
- Ability to accurately complete data entry at a relatively high speed, utilizing grammar and spell check software.
- Basic computer literacy (e.g., managing appointments, accessing electronic medical records).
- Basic knowledge of accounting principles and ability to perform basic mathematics and computations.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Basic written and verbal communication skills.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
- Intermediate knowledge of medical programs such as CMS, Medi-Cal, Medicare, Worker's Compensation, and private insurance preferred.

Schedule
- Temporary, full-time position.
- Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM or 8:30 AM–5:30 PM.
- Onsite location: 100 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910.
