Billing Analyst

About the role

The Billing Analyst ensures the timely and accurate production and distribution of customer bills in accordance with customer contracts, policies, and procedures. They address various billing data requests from internal and external customers, review accounts payable invoices related to purchased power, wheeling, and related services, and assist with the development and maintenance of the SAP, CCS, and BI Billing Systems. The role involves troubleshooting problems and collaborating with internal and external partners and technical staff to resolve issues.

Responsibilities

• Ensure timely and accurate invoicing of customers and vendor payments in line with negotiated contracts, policies, and procedures.
• Analyze data to prepare regularly scheduled and specialized reports, analyses, and statements for management review.
• Review and analyze statistical reports for individual customer groupings; provide support with data analysis and report preparation.
• Provide testing support for transactions during system patches.
• Review data interfaced from various sources (S&S, EE&ED, IOU’s, etc.) used in creating customer invoices to check for accuracy and identify issues.
• Review data from Business Intelligence reports for accuracy of customer billing and invoicing.
• Perform data analysis to produce semi-complex customer invoices as assigned; review and distribute finalized invoices to customers.
• Analyze power generation data for individual customer group billing for accuracy and use in monthly and year-end reporting to the Department of Energy (DOE).
• Provide the Billing Manager with a record of issues identified during each billing cycle.
• Review NYPA’s Wheeling bills from other utilities for payment.
• Act as a liaison between the Billing department and other NYPA departments or external vendors, providing advice on billing matters and resolving outstanding issues.
• Serve as a backup to the Senior Billing Analyst for updating transported price changes, analyzing and loading interface files into the ERP billing system, and correcting errors in the Error Management System.

Requirements

• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, etc.) is required.
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills are required.

• Ability to consistently meet strict deadlines.
• Ability to represent NYPA professionally to all internal and external customers.
• Ability to analyze billing data and use sound judgment regarding matters of importance.
• Ability to assist Billing Representatives in resolving issues and seek guidance as appropriate.
• Proactive in achieving goals and able to work independently with minor guidance from superiors.
• Ability to assist with directing the work of Billing Representatives when delegated by management.
• General understanding of the utility industry, its suppliers, and electric utility billing concepts and terminology is preferred.
• Ability to identify potential incorrect charges and correct them intelligently with guidance and supervision.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 2 years’ experience, preferred.
• Associate’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 4 years’ experience, preferred.
• High school diploma in a relevant field with a minimum of 6 years’ experience, preferred.
• Working knowledge of computerized billing systems is preferred.
• Experience working in an ERP system is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Limited travel (about 10%) required, primarily to generating facilities.

Pay

The estimated salary range for this position is $73,000 - $91,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
