Bilingual Teacher (K-8 Spanish Reading)

About the Role

Under the supervision of the school principal, responsible for instruction, specialized services, and support to students to develop their ability to effectively perform courses of study in the English language. This includes disciplining students in assigned classes and performing related duties as required.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement instructional planning, including lesson plans and preparation aligned with the objectives of the instructional program, Chicago Public Schools’ policies and procedures, Illinois Learning Standards, and state and federal law.
• Administer tests and language assessments to evaluate students’ language ability.
• Assess students’ progress, expectations, and goals in the bilingual program.
• Create and deliver lesson plans using appropriate instructional techniques to help limited English proficient students overcome barriers to equal participation in the district’s instructional programs.
• Establish positive learning expectations and evaluate students’ progress while maintaining accurate records of their achievements.
• Apply contemporary principles of learning theory and teaching methodology, utilizing a range of instructional materials available in the school.
• Participate in the development and implementation of new teaching techniques.
• Design bulletin boards and interest areas reflective of students’ current work.
• Demonstrate and apply knowledge of curriculum content related to subject areas and instructional level.
• Participate in programs to improve student attendance and promote anti-vandalism initiatives.
• Establish and maintain responsible rules of conduct within the classroom and on school grounds (e.g., playgrounds, corridors, lunchrooms), consistent with Chicago Public Schools’ Uniform Discipline Code.
• Maintain accurate attendance records and seating charts.
• Encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept.
• Ensure fairness in teacher-student relationships and exhibit understanding and respect for students.
• Initiate conferences with parents, guardians, administrators, and ancillary personnel following school procedures.
• Communicate with parents or guardians regarding students’ academic progress, attendance, and conduct.
• Participate in in-service meetings, professional staff meetings, and use pertinent information and materials provided.
• May coordinate and attend class field trips.
• May participate in extra-curricular and after-school activities.
• Utilize appropriate community resources.

Requirements

• Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework required for the appropriate teaching license issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
• Must possess an Illinois State Board of Education-issued educator license with a bilingual endorsement in the grade level being taught.

Physical Requirements

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands include:

Pay

Salary range: $64,469.94 to $82,839.39.
