BHRS Peer Support Counselor II, Bilingual Required (English/Spanish)

About the role

The County of Marin seeks a Full-Time, Regular-Hire Peer Support Counselor II (Bilingual-Required) to join the Mobile Crisis Continuum (MCC) under the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Division (BHRS).

Responsibilities

• Provide significant help to colleagues and potential clients by fostering communication and establishing trust.
• Answer and log calls for service using a standardized intake screening tool.
• Collaborate with team members and community-based organizations including schools, hospitals, law enforcement, private providers, and BHRS Systems of Care.
• Assist with case follow-up and provide emotional support or partner with clinicians for field-based follow-ups.
• Develop an in-depth understanding of available resources and utilize warm hand-offs to ensure continuity of care.
• Document client/collateral contacts in the county’s designated electronic health records.
• Utilize various documentation templates to ensure standardization and standards of care are met.

Requirements

• Experience working with clients experiencing severe and persistent mental health challenges across all ages in crisis or emergent situations.
• Effective communication, reliability, and consistent performance.
• Organizational skills and ability to document complex client information quickly, accurately, and concisely.
• Ability to de-escalate people in high-stress and/or high-anxiety situations.

Qualifications

• BHRS Peer Counselor I: Lived experience as a consumer of services or as a family member/caregiver of a former or current consumer, plus 12 units of college course work in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field, or successful completion of intermediate coursework level in a Peer Counseling or Substance Use Educational Certificate Program.
• BHRS Peer Counselor II: One year of experience comparable to the BHRS Peer Counselor I, plus 24 units of college course work in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling related field, or two years of volunteer, internship, or work experience of at least 20 hours per week at a public behavioral healthcare setting.

SkillsKnowledge of needs and difficulties faced by diverse consumers, caregivers, and families of consumers of services.

Understanding of public and/or private agency services available for families, children, and adults for assigned area.

Ability to understand the fundamentals of the assigned area and effectively work within the system.

Effective communication, representation, and advocacy for the consumer perspective within the community and the system in the assigned area.

Understanding and articulation of cultural and social factors affecting behavior patterns.

Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Ability to obtain and record accurate information for case documentation and other reports.

Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise reports and other written material.

Benefits

Shift Hours:

• CAT: Monday – Friday 10am-6pm with a 30-minute lunch
• MCRT: Sunday- Thursday 7am-3pm with 30 minute lunch
• Tuesday -Saturday 2pm-10pm with 30 minute lunch

Differentials:

• PM/evening shift = 7.5%
• NOC/overnight shift = 15%
• Weekend shift = 10%
• Weekend PM/evening shift = 17.5%
• Weekend NOC/Overnight shift = 25%

Bilingual Testing/Certification: The successful candidate must possess bilingual skills and demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment.

The pay for this position is commensurate with experience.

The schedule for this position includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
