About the role
The Oregon Department of Human Services is seeking a Benefits Support Specialist (Public Benefits Specialist, Entry) to join the Oregon Eligibility Partnership (OEP) team. OEP helps people in Oregon access vital services that foster equity and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Helping individuals and families seeking services by providing specialized assistance on behalf of program staff.
- Providing a safety net, family stability, and a connection to careers that guide Oregonians out of poverty.
- Facilitating access to life-changing programs such as food benefits (SNAP), cash for families (TANF), childcare assistance (ERDC), medical, refugee services, and domestic violence services and long-term care services.
- Answering case status and other inquiries for applicants through the online applicant portal, phone, and in-person visits.
- Supporting the day-to-day functions through distribution of emails and case transfers.
- Contributing to the welcoming environment as families interact with the department.
- Working within a team that collaboratively rotates tasks to support the business needs of the office.
Requirements
- Two years of experience working in a reception area or call center either: interviewing to obtain information OR providing customer service.
- An associate degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science or a closely related field AND six months of experience working in a busy reception area or call center either interviewing to obtain information or providing customer service.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience relative to the class concept.

- Customer Service: Experience delivering high-volume customer service with active listening, empathy, and clear communication.
- Professionalism & Integrity: Demonstrated ability to handle confidential or sensitive information with discretion. Holds self to high standards of honesty and ethical conduct.
- Technical Skills: Comfortable using computers, Microsoft Office, email, web browsers, and multi-line phone systems. Able to learn new web-based tools and use multiple systems at the same time to research, document, and locate information.
- Communication & Collaboration: Able to explain rules, processes, or requirements clearly in writing and verbally. Builds positive, inclusive working relationships. Skilled in resolving misunderstandings or conflicts professionally.
