About the role

A busy and growing healthcare practice is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Benefits Coordinator to join its front office team. This position plays a critical role in supporting patient access to care by verifying insurance eligibility, obtaining prior authorizations, maintaining accurate patient records, and assisting with insurance-related issues. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced medical environment. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for clinic visits, procedures, and surgeries through carrier websites and direct communication with insurance companies.
  • Maintain accurate patient demographic and insurance information within practice management and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Review and document patient deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other benefit information.
  • Complete and upload required insurance and benefits documentation into patient records.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for office visits, procedures, diagnostic testing, and surgeries as required.
  • Secure approvals for emergency services involving HMO and PPO plans.
  • Enter referrals and authorization information accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Follow up on pending authorizations, insurance inquiries, and accounts requiring additional research.
  • Communicate with scheduling and front desk staff regarding insurance verification issues and missing information.
  • Assist in resolving insurance and billing issues that may impact patient care or claim processing.
  • Provide additional front-office support as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of experience in insurance verification, benefits coordination, prior authorizations, medical billing, or a related healthcare role.
  • Experience working in a medical office or healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems, practice management software, and insurance carrier portals.
  • Knowledge of insurance eligibility, referrals, and authorization processes.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
  • Regular use of a telephone, computer, and standard office equipment.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
