Benbrook YMCA Youth Sports Official

As a YMCA Sports Official, you will officiate soccer, volleyball, and basketball games, ensuring a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all participants. You will enforce game rules, maintain control of the game, and promote good sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators while creating a positive and inclusive environment that reflects the YMCA’s core values.

Responsibilities

• Officiate youth sports games, ensuring adherence to the rules and regulations of the sport and making impartial, accurate calls.
• Monitor the safety of all participants, identify potential hazards, and respond appropriately to injuries or emergencies.
• Encourage and model good sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive behavior among participants, coaches, and spectators.
• Communicate effectively with players, coaches, and parents, explaining rules and decisions clearly and calmly.
• Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for games and practices, ensuring all necessary equipment is available and in good condition.
• Address conflicts or disputes that arise during games in a professional and effective manner.
• Attend required training sessions and meetings, staying informed about rule changes and best practices in youth sports officiating.
• Maintain accurate records of game scores, incidents, and any disciplinary actions taken.

Qualifications

• Prior experience as a sports official or referee is preferred.
• Essential knowledge of the specific sport being officiated.
• Certification in officiating (if applicable for the specific sport).
• CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain it.

Skills

• Strong understanding of the rules and regulations of the sport.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to make quick, fair, and confident decisions.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand, walk, and run for extended periods.
• Capability to work in various weather conditions when officiating outdoor sports.
