Behavorial Consultant

This position is within the Community TIES program, part of Community Outreach Wisconsin at the Waisman Center. Community TIES provides behavioral support to children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) living in the community. The role involves behavioral consultations, therapeutic techniques to ensure continued community participation, and limited statewide consultations and training.

About the role

The Waisman Center is one of 15 centers in the U.S. dedicated to advancing knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases. It encompasses biomedical and behavioral research laboratories, scientific research cores, a clinical biomanufacturing facility, and provides services, educational programs, and training for individuals with developmental disabilities and professionals in the field.

This position contributes to the core functions of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), including training, research, dissemination of best practices, and model service demonstration.

Responsibilities

• Create and present trainings for community members and caregivers related to individuals with disabilities.
• Assist in providing rehabilitation counselor instruction to students and interns.
• Assess patients, determine appropriate treatment, and create specialized treatment plans to develop coping skills, modify behavior, and increase independence.
• Update patient records with treatment plans and progress; report noticeable changes in client behavior to personnel in accordance with departmental and agency guidelines.
• Represent rehabilitation service programs among community agencies to raise awareness of services and coordinate patient treatment across specialties.
• Contribute to core UCEDD functions: training/teaching, research, dissemination of evidence and best practices, and model service demonstration.

Requirements

• Three years of experience in providing support to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) in community settings. Undergraduate or graduate student work experience will be considered.
• Experience in developing and writing behavioral support plans. Undergraduate or graduate student work experience will be considered.
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field is required.
• A Criminal Background Check will be performed.
• Successful applicant will complete HIPAA training and receive certification upon hire and annually thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Skills in individual counseling and small group counseling techniques, including building rapport, facilitating or de-escalating situations, and using proactive techniques effectively.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including basic computer competency.
• Skills in offering training and facilitating a team process.
• Knowledge of and advocacy for "best practice" strategies related to Community Inclusion for persons with IDD.
• Experience in offering direct training to Community Support Teams on positive behavioral supports.
• Experience supporting mental health needs of persons with IDD, including managing crisis situations.
• Knowledge of funding resources including the Children's Long-Term Support Waiver (CLTS), Family Care, and Include, Respect, I Self-Direct (IRIS).
• A Master’s Degree in Social Work or a related field is preferred.

Pay

$53,514 minimum; salary is negotiable and based on education, experience, and skills.
