About the role

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) at Oceans Behavioral Hospital Lake Charles supports the nursing staff in maintaining a therapeutic environment. They assist in patient care activities, ensuring a safe and professional standard while adhering to regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to professional standards, follow policies and procedures, and comply with federal, state, and local requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
  • Effectively apply supportive behavior and employ de-escalation and therapeutic interventions when assisting patients with unacceptable behavior.
  • Inventories patient belongings accurately and secures contraband as needed; completes unit safety checks.
  • Complies with standard/universal precautions and infection control policies, attending required in-services to stay informed.
  • Implements patient care activities under the direction and supervision of licensed nursing personnel, performing tasks such as vital signs, weights, ADLs, intake and output documentation, nutritional monitoring, and communicating findings to the nurse.
  • Assists patients with laundry, meals, bathroom functions, and maintaining belongings; assists at-risk or physically challenged patients with mobility needs as needed.
  • Individualizes all patient care activities to meet the age-specific, disability, and cultural sensitivity needs of each patient.
  • Communicates and documents patient observations and data effectively in the patient record; documents patient departures, significant occurrences, vital signs, nutrition intake, and patient observation findings on assigned patients with 100% accuracy and within defined time lines.
  • Communicates outcomes of assigned tasks to nursing staff in a timely manner; communicates follow-up on patient care responsibilities, including incomplete assignments, ongoing activities, and current patient needs to relevant staff to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent with CNA certification or at least 6 months of prior bedside, direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to read, write, and follow verbal and written instruction.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations.
  • Utilize age, disability, and cultural specific knowledge in working with specialized populations.
  • Good physical and mental health as evidenced by a warm empathetic attitude, respect for dignity, worth, and potentiality of clients, and a high sense of personal integrity.
  • Successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral de-escalation program.
