Behavioral Health Technician (Early Intervention)

Position Overview

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct support to preschool-aged students with developmental, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs within an Early Intervention classroom. Working alongside special education teachers, therapists, behavior specialists, and Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), the BHT helps students participate in classroom activities, develop independence, and make progress toward Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. This position is ideal for individuals who are patient, collaborative, and passionate about supporting young learners in a structured educational setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct support to preschool-aged students with developmental and behavioral needs.
• Aid students with classroom routines, transitions, group activities, and social interactions.
• Encourage student engagement and participation in educational activities.
• Support teachers in implementing Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and classroom instruction.
• Assist with small-group and one-on-one learning activities.
• Reinforce communication, developmental, and early learning skills.
• Implement positive behavior support strategies and reinforcement systems.
• Follow Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and collaborate with behavior specialists and BCBAs as needed.
• Assist students with feeding, toileting, diapering, hygiene, and other personal care needs.
• Promote independence and age-appropriate self-care skills.
• Collect behavioral and instructional data and complete required documentation.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, behavior specialists, and other educational staff.
• Supervise students during classroom instruction, transitions, lunch, recess, and other school activities.
• Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment.
• Utilize approved intervention techniques during behavioral escalations when necessary.
• Follow established safety procedures and crisis response protocols.
• Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA.
• Follow organizational policies, procedures, and professional standards.
• Complete a minimum of 20 hours of annual professional development.

Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT).
• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience working in an educational, behavioral health, or Intermediate Unit setting.
• Ability to assist with toileting, diapering, feeding, and other personal care needs.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain patient, flexible, and supportive while working with young children with diverse learning and behavioral needs.
