Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) plays a key role in supporting clients throughout the full continuum of care—from admission through discharge. This role ensures a safe, structured, and recovery-oriented environment by providing direct support, monitoring client well-being, and reinforcing treatment goals. BHTs partner closely with clinical and medical teams to deliver consistent, compassionate, and accountable care.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support clients with daily living activities, routines, and scheduled programming
  • Provide orientation to new clients, including program expectations and structure
  • Encourage participation in recovery programming and communicate observations to the care team
  • Assist with or co-facilitate groups under clinical supervision
  • Respond appropriately to client needs, including emotional or behavioral escalations
  • Monitor client safety and adherence to program expectations
  • Conduct vital signs, drug screens, and breathalyzer testing per protocol
  • Maintain accurate documentation and chain-of-custody standards
  • Complete safety rounds and environmental checks
  • Follow all facility safety, emergency, and infection control protocols
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and meet company driving requirements (if applicable)
  • Transport clients to appointments, recovery meetings, and approved community activities in accordance with state regulations (if applicable)

Qualifications

  • Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent, must be at least 21 years of age, valid driver’s license (if transporting clients), CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days), ability to pass background and motor vehicle checks
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field, 1+ year experience in behavioral health, substance use disorder treatment, or residential care, familiarity with 12-Step programs, recovery principles, or co-occurring disorders, personal or professional experience with recovery (if applicable)

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Residential treatment setting with moderate activity level. Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 50 lbs with assistance). Ability to respond to emergencies and support clients in crisis. Ability to multitask and maintain composure in fast-paced environments.
