Job Summary

The Bed Control Coordinator RN oversees patient throughput in the hospital(s). Key roles and functions include optimizing hospital bed capacity, coordinating admissions, transfers, and discharges, and maintaining timely placements for all patients needing admission.

About the Role

Works closely with nursing, EVS, and leadership to accomplish these objectives. Consistently contributes to department operations and communications, behaving in a manner consistent with Pipeline Health's mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate clinical acuity and needs of patients arriving from ED, OR, or outside transfers to assign them to appropriate units.
  • Maintain daily discharge lists and coordinate with unit nurses, case managers, and housekeeping to ensure rapid room preparation for new admissions.
  • Monitor hospital census, anticipate capacity issues, and work with clinical leaders to manage or escalate during high-census periods.
  • Liaise with providers, nursing staff, administrators, and Patient Hub to keep all stakeholders informed.
  • Adjust nurse-to-patient ratios and resource allocation to meet fluctuating patient volumes safely.
  • Facilitate patient throughput with a focus on quality and efficiency, prioritizing bed requests and assignments.
  • Navigate or resolve bed assignment conflicts, escalating as necessary to appropriate resources.
  • Evaluate daily staffing grids with House Supervisors, assisting in adjustments and reallocating resources.
  • Facilitate bed management meetings as needed.
  • Track and trend barriers to patient flow, making recommendations and developing action plans to improve processes and systems.
  • Apply understanding of EMTALA regulations to decisions regarding ER and inter-facility transfer patients.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers, patients, and all customers, using AIDET and SBAR.
  • Utilize whiteboards for patient communication.
  • Treat tasks with a sense of urgency.
  • Report on equipment and environmental issues for repair.
  • Comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Complete and attend required training.

Requirements

  • One (1) year experience as a RN with broad-based clinical knowledge and experience in ICU, Critical Care, or ED, preferred.
  • One (1) year experience as a Nursing House Supervisor in an acute care hospital, preferred.
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, strong organizational skills, ability to follow verbal instructions, and PC skills.
  • A capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, prioritize patients and families, and collaborate with team members.

Qualifications

  • Broad-based clinical knowledge and experience in ICU, Critical Care, or ED.
  • Experience as a Nursing House Supervisor in an acute care hospital.
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow verbal instructions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, prioritize patients and families, and collaborate with team members.
