Bear Run Night Shift - Mechanic 1

About the role

We are seeking a Night Shift Mechanic to join our Maintenance team at our Bear Run Mine, the largest surface coal mine in the Eastern United States. The mine produces high-quality thermal coal using draglines, dozers, and shovels to extract and load coal onto haul trucks for rail shipment. Bear Run has approximately 240 million tons of provable and probable reserves, serving industrial facilities and customers that provide power to millions of residents in Indiana and beyond.

This role involves performing preventive and breakdown maintenance on fixed and mobile mine equipment in an open-cut environment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect work area and plant for hazards, damage, and defects
• Examine drawings or specifications to determine work methods, sequence of activities, or manufacture of components
• Diagnose faults or breakdowns
• Estimate time and materials required to complete jobs
• Raise orders for materials
• Undertake repairs or component changeouts as required
• Clean and maintain tools and work area
• Train other personnel or apprentices (if required)
• Ensure activities comply with safety, environmental, and statutory requirements
• Other duties as assigned by the company

Schedule

This position works a night shift schedule of 5 PM – 4 AM. It may also require working weekends, holidays, or other shifts as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum of one year of experience repairing and troubleshooting large surface mining equipment
• High School diploma or GED required

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift
• Ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
• Ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps, and climb on/off equipment and ladders
• Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
• Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand-to-eye coordination
• Ability to lift/raise 10 – 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the work shift
• Ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying noise levels (low to high decibels), varying light/dark conditions, artificial light, and confined work areas
• Ability to work various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays
