Join the City of Round Rock and the Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority (BCRUA) as a Water Treatment Plant Operator at the BCRUA water treatment plant in Cedar Park. This essential role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of water treatment facilities. Depending on qualifications and experience, the position may be filled at either the Operator-In-Training level or as a certified Operator.

About the Role

This position supports the BCRUA’s water treatment plant and distribution system, contributing to operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and safety. Candidates should bring strong technical skills and a commitment to maintaining high standards in water treatment operations.

Pay

  • Operator-In-Training: $44,720 to $54,080 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Treatment Plant Operator: $49,920 to $60,840 annually, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Operator-In-Training

  • Perform routine tasks to support operational and general maintenance at the BCRUA water treatment plant and distribution system.
  • Assist with routine facility rounds to monitor treatment processes and identify anomalies or mechanical issues.
  • Handle treatment chemicals as needed and assist with predictive and corrective maintenance on equipment such as pumps, blowers, clarifiers, and valves.
  • Perform lab analysis (e.g., pH, alkalinity, turbidity, chlorine residual, hardness, temperature, conductivity) and document results.
  • Learn to calculate chemical dosages and adjust treatment processes as needed.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance tasks, including lubrication, fluid changes, and installing components like packing, bearings, and seals.
  • Support process control tasks, including flow control, sampling, basic laboratory testing, and operating pumps and blowers.
  • Maintain plant operations and maintenance records using logbooks, databases, and spreadsheets.

Treatment Plant Operator

  • Monitor remote sites and BCRUA treatment facilities, which operate 24/7, using the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Operate the surface water treatment plant to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Utilize SCADA and reporting tools to verify and optimize treatment processes.
  • Perform routine and non-routine maintenance on chemical feed equipment, pumps, motors, and valves; troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Conduct water quality testing, document results, and adjust treatment processes as needed.
  • Perform control room duties, including monitoring city facilities via SCADA, responding to emergencies, and optimizing system operations.
  • Assist with on-the-job training for Operator-In-Training personnel.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and process failures, conduct plant rounds, and escalate complex issues as needed.
  • Ensure plant processes operate within regulated parameters and report out-of-compliance occurrences to supervisors.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience and Training

  • Operator-In-Training: At least six (6) months of general work experience.
  • Treatment Plant Operator: At least one (1) year of experience in treatment plant operation or a similar position.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Operator-In-Training:
    • Class C Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain before employment).
    • Must obtain a Class D Water License issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within one year of hire, if not currently held.
    • Ability to obtain a Class C Surface Water License issued by TCEQ within three years of employment.
  • Treatment Plant Operator:
    • Class C Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain before employment).
    • Current Class C Surface Water License issued by TCEQ.
