Basic Sciences Faculty Position, Bezos Family Distinguished Scholar
About the role
The Basic Sciences Division of Fred Hutch Cancer Center seeks a visionary scientific leader to accelerate discoveries in fundamental biology that can transform our understanding of normal cellular function and the disruptions that underlie cancer and other diseases. This position is for faculty pursuing fundamental, mechanistic questions broadly relevant to one or more of the scientific priority areas: Immunotherapy, Precision Oncology, Data Science, or Viruses and Vaccines (interpreted broadly). The role includes generous startup funds, an endowed chair, funding for internal and external collaborations, and resources to support an additional, separate faculty recruitment for the Division. The search targets Associate and Full Professors (or equivalent ranks), with appointment as a full-time Associate or Full Professor in the Basic Sciences Division; an adjunct appointment with other Fred Hutch divisions and a University of Washington department may be considered. Founded in 1981, the Division continually evolves to understand the fundamental underpinnings of biology and the dysregulations that cause disease, with faculty pursuing structural, genetic, molecular, cellular, developmental, infectious disease, and evolutionary biology using experimental and computational approaches. Fred Hutch values an inclusive, collaborative, egalitarian, and creative environment as the basis for scientific innovation and world‑changing discoveries, seeking a colleague committed to fundamental, curiosity‑driven research and the freedom to follow where the science leads. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit cancer treatment and research center in Seattle, operating eight clinical care sites and the only NCI‑designated cancer center in Washington, with global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy, and COVID‑19 vaccines. Seattle offers a vibrant hub for cutting‑edge science, hosting research powerhouses such as the University of Washington, Allen Institute, Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Benaroya Institute, plus a thriving biotech sector, enabling rich collaboration and a fast‑moving scientific community. Faculty are expected to perform their primary activities on‑site at Fred Hutch, where the center values collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity, and respect, tying its mission to the humanity, dignity, and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member, and supporter.
