Band Assistant (Academic Supplemental Position)
Compensation: Per LUTEA Supplemental Salary Schedule $2,795.07 - $5,403.79 based on verified paid K-12 public school band experience.
About the Role
Recently, the role has primarily involved working with the LU Drumline directly, providing large and small group instruction and development, as well as equipment management and maintenance (e.g., yearly needs assessment, head changes, harness adjustment, etc.).
The position typically starts during Pre-Band Camp in July, where placement auditions are conducted for the season. After band camp, the assistant will arrange a schedule in coordination with and under the direction of the high school principal and band director. Responsibilities may include attending weekly after-school rehearsals, football games, and parades/festivals as scheduled, through the end of the football season, with the last obligation usually being the end-of-season Lions in Concert performance.
Outside of working with the Drumline directly, this position will assist the head director with instruction of the ensemble and other duties as requested, such as part rewrites or full arrangements for songs and cadences, running sectionals/rehearsals, minor instrument repair, working with individuals or small groups, and logistics planning.
Band directing and teaching require a broad skill set, and this role may involve completing a wide scope of duties. The position works collaboratively with the band director but supports the Head Director’s global vision for the program.
