Job Summary

The City of Dallas is seeking a first level bailiff to provide law enforcement and protective services within the court system. This position ensures the safety of city employees, residents, and visitors, and fosters compliance with state and city laws.

Overview

The bailiff provides law enforcement and protective services within the court system of the City of Dallas, ensuring the safety of those present and maintaining order in the courtroom.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains order in a municipal courtroom and protects judges, jurors, witnesses, plaintiffs, prosecuting attorneys, and defendants from physical violence to ensure courtroom safety and compliance with courtroom procedures.
  • Provides appropriate courtroom or grand jury testimony as subpoenaed and applies proper courtroom techniques, rules of evidence, and procedures to ensure order in the courtroom and safety of visitors and court staff.
  • Researches warrants/subjects by accessing city, state, or federal records to enable dispositions of disputed cases or warrants and ensures all pertinent information is available.
  • Makes determination whether or not to incarcerate individuals with class "C" criminal arrest warrants to ensure protection for the public and/or property in the courtroom setting.
  • Investigates and researches internal affairs complaints regarding department or any member of the court staff; ensures the integrity of the Court System is preserved.
  • Ensures and enforces judges' orders, city ordinances, court rules, and state and federal laws; provides information to the public and assists with questions, concerns, and general safety issues.
  • Transports and books into jail all subjects apprehended in the course of assigned duties.
  • Executes warrants of arrests and/or serves civil processes issued out of the Municipal Court, Officer of the City Attorney, City Prosecutor, City Secretary, City Health Official, Civil Service Commission, or any municipal entity possessing subpoena power to obtain evidence for court proceedings.
  • Ensures the jury stays isolated from the public and do not discuss the case with each other.
  • Performs administrative tasks, data entry, and preparing audio and digital case files.
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of courtroom techniques and rule of evidence procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal codes, court procedures, and precedents, federal and state laws and city and county ordinances.
  • Discretion and ability to follow strict regulations regarding confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Police Standard Operating Procedures, general and special orders applicable to all aspects of law enforcement practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively handle situations with public under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all parties involved.
  • Skill in handling evidence, including filtering relevant documentation, and presenting to the judge, when necessary.
  • Knowledge of techniques of serving subpoenas.
  • Ability to escort judges, jurors, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants to and from the courtroom.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement, such as working as a law enforcement officer.
  • Educational Equivalency: Associate degree in criminal justice, law, or a relevant field and one (1) year of law enforcement experience may meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Must have passed the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Peace Officer Licensing exam. Valid driver's license with good driving record. Current Firearm Qualification. CPR or First Aid Training Certification.
  • Other Requirements: Must pass an intensive background investigation. Must pass polygraph, psychological testing, and drug screening. No felony or Class A Misdemeanor convictions. No Class B Misdemeanors within the last ten (10) years. Availability to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be in good physical condition and pass drug test.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $60,569.60 - $73,528.00. The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
